For Hindus, Diwali, recognized as the festival of lights and marks the start of the New Year. On this day divas are lit in the home, colorful motifs are painted on floors in India, new clothes are worn and sweets and snacks are shared with family and friends. With Diwali greeting cards being a rarity to find in the US I decided to create my own to send to family and friends.
For the graphic, I used a traditional wooden block, already carved with a motif, purchased on a recent trip to India. Block printing, an old Indian art form, adds a traditional element to an otherwise western approach of expressing celebratory feelings. For the stock, I chose a natural colored, fibrous cover stock with bronze flecks to lend to the earthiness of the traditional printing process. The overall production, for the 30 card print run, including printing a greeting on the interior and exterior of the card on a home printer, block printing the motif with custom blended inks, and as a finishing touch, bronze fine glitter was added to specific spots of the motif. With ample space on the interior panel, I can customize each card with a personal message.
